Road to Avonlea—25 Years On

"When you look around you at the haunted hill, at the homestead lights, at the fields tilled by the dead and gone who loved them, you''ll say, 'Why, I've come home, to this life.'"
- Hetty King

It has been 25 years since the final episode of Road to Avonlea aired, but it continues to hold a very special place in the hearts of so many. Created by Kevin Sullivan and based on multiple works by L.M Montgomery herself, the series follows the lives of the King family of Avonlea as well as their friends and neighbours as they face the joys and challenges of small-town life.

When Colleen Dewhurst, who played Marilla Cuthbert in both Anne of Green Gables and its sequel, Anne of Avonlea, lent her support to the idea of creating a long-running television series set in the town of Avonlea, Kevin Sullivan decided to give it a go. Little did either of them know how well this show would be received and how we fans would cherish it so many years later.

With its stellar cast of characters, notable guest stars, beautiful landscapes, and varying and captivating storylines, the series provides a refreshing glimpse at times gone by that all generations can enjoy. Anyone who loves the Anne films will be pleasantly surprised to see a myriad of familiar faces. If you haven't yet seen this most beloved of shows, I strongly suggest that you do so now. It's my favourite and one that I know you will love.

"Wherever you wander, whatever glorious adventures lie ahead of you, you can rest easy knowing you've a place to come home to, the dearest spot on earth: our Avonlea."
