"Gilmore Girls" Celebrates 20 Year Anniversary

Updated: May 8, 2021

“People can live a hundred years without really living for a minute.” - Gilmore Girls, Logan Huntzberger

Can you believe it’s been 20 years?! Written by Amy Sherman-Palladino, the comedy-drama series first came on screen on October 5th, 2000. The show focuses on the relationship between mother Lorelei Gilmore (Lauren Graham, Parenthood) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel, Tuck Everlasting). Set in a fictional town in Connecticut called Stars Hollow, the show explores all of the Gilmores ups and downs like school, family, romances, trying to follow their dreams, and sometimes meeting disappointment.

I have fond memories of watching Gilmore Girls with my mother every morning during autumn while drinking coffee and wearing big chunky sweaters. To me, it’s one of the ultimate comfort shows that television can offer! You can easily become transported to Stars Hollow with their festivals, bookshops, and Luke’s Diner.

Not only is it atmospheric and cozy, but it also has a huge impact on the dark academia community. There’s Rory going to a pretentious private school with dreams of going to Harvard, secret clubs with Latin codes, and not to mention Rory’s reading list. She’s seen with multiple books, especially classics, throughout the series.

“I just take a book with me everywhere. It’s a habit.” - Rory Gilmore

There’s actually a Rory reading challenge going on, and you can find it here.

This show is heartfelt, hilarious, and relatable. If you like coffee, books, drama, and something to get comfy with, this show is for you! I’ve talked to multiple people from different backgrounds who are invested fans, proving that the series appeals to a diverse audience. If you’d like to check it out, you can find all seven seasons on Netflix. Or, if it’s already a favorite of yours, maybe now is the perfect time for a marathon!
