Why Old Books are My Favorite Decor

Time-worn keepers of decades worth of wonder and knowledge, imagination and inspiration- old books are commonplace treasures to many of us. They are good for many things, first and foremost reading. But I believe their age gives them a charm that lends itself to a wider range of uses. They make wonderful photo props and loyal companions when you need to fill your bag before a picnic. However one of my favorite ways to use these old volumes is to surround myself with them in my own home.

Books come in many sizes and colors, and when they reach their golden age, they seem to infinitely enhance any space they are placed in. They have likely been passed through countless hands and seen the world in many of its phases, or watched the lives of all sorts of individuals play out.

You can set them on shelves, stack them in a corner, display them on the wall as art, or use them as pedestals for potted plants. As long as you are sure to protect these relics from harm, the possibilities are delightful. And the best part is, although old books are a very becoming addition to a room, they will always have an integral use and that is to be read.

I think it’s marvellous when a house becomes a home. This happens when we live in a place and become very comfortable in it, and surround ourselves with things that make it feel like a place where we truly belong. A basket of blankets by the fireplace is pleasant to look at, and both the blankets and the fire have a daily use. A cozy, wonderful purpose.

It is no different with books. You might open your front door and take a look around… There is a selection of herbs growing on the windowsill, a breeze blowing against light muslin curtains, and a quaint oil lamp ready to be lit by your favorite chair. Above it is a shelf adorned with antique books that have been collected or passed down over the years. You’ve always thought they made the place look splendid and charming. But you’re also an avid reader. So you curl up in that chair, light the lamp, take a breath of the sweet spring air that came in through the window, and open your favorite, worn, dusty, beloved book.
