What is the "Hygge Lifestyle"?

Updated: May 8, 2021

If you're like me, when you first heard the term 'hygge', you probably had no idea what it meant. The Oxford dictionary describes it as:

"a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being".

Although we don't know exactly where the term "hygge" originated, it is generally thought to come from the word 'hugr' which comes from the old Norse word, hug.

The majority of people take this term to mean something along the lines of simplicity, graciousness, family, and warmth. It is truly less of a term and more of a way of life. Think laughter, books, or a serene forest. All of these together would create a perfect hygge day.

I like to live my life based around hygge. For myself, it's a perfectly balanced way of life. I'm all about blocking the negativity in life and trying to focus on the good. Hygge can play into so many aspects of your life if you let it. It's eating chocolate or cookies without feeling guilty, going on a hike and enjoying nature, or sitting with family and having fun.

So much of today's world is fast-paced. We've been taught to never be satisfied with what we have. As humans, we strive to be accepted and successful in society, even if that means ignoring what should be more important in our lives until we're "happy". The hygge lifestyle is the exact opposite. It's about enjoying the little things in life and taking time for ourselves.

If you're looking to start living this lifestyle, start by doing things you love, and that brings you joy. If that's drinking coffee while reading a book, do it. Other hygge inspired activities include lighting candles and listening to indie pop music. It's surprisingly calming and quite cozy. Another activity is going to a coffee shop with a friend and just enjoying their company.

Basically, the hygge lifestyle is about the warm, comforting, and cozy things in life. So just do whatever makes you feel contented, and you will be embracing the hygge lifestyle.
