My Vintage-Inspired Autumn Look Book

Updated: May 8, 2021

Autumn is a time to wear sweaters, scarves, cozy socks, and your most stylish boots. As someone who revels in historical fashion and vintage vibes, I was so excited to plan my outfits for this season around old-timey aesthetics. I like to describe my personal style as "Edwardian forest"; it is very similar to cottagecore but also has some casual and woodsy elements. I hope you enjoy these photos, which depict me in my stylized fall wardrobe as I wander happily through a local forest.

Look One: Schoolroom Daydreams

Perfect for trips to the library, this playful ensemble consists of a white button-down shirt (link here), a ROOLEE sweater dress, a sweet flared skirt from The Cottagecore, and some adorable knit socks (also from The Cottagecore). The layering is great for cooler weather and those who want to ramble through frosted woods before dawn. I imagine myself tripping off to a village schoolhouse in some faraway time. If you wear this with your nose in a book, you will instantly give off Avonlea vibes.

Look Two: 40s

Though skirts and dresses are always fun, it is easy to create a vintage look with jeans as well. This outfit is perfect for those who want to feel like a carefree, tree-climbing adventuress from the 1940s. I paired a cozy yellow knit sweater over a white collared shirt with an old pair of Calvin Klein wide-leg jeans. Wear your favorite Oxford flats or Mary Janes to complete the outfit, and don't forget to smile like a film star on her vacation in the countryside!

Look Three: Apple Picking

This is one of the easiest dresses to wear and style for any season. ROOLEE's Maddie Buffalo check dress, worn here with an olive knit cardigan, some socks from The Cottagecore, and a black and gold broach owned by my great grandmother all complete the look. I love this ensemble because it's the perfect blend of practicality and femininity. Pairing some retro style shoes (Get mine using this link) with an old piece of jewelry adds a lovely vintage touch. The outfit is perfect for frolicking and long outdoor activities in the harvest months.

Look Four: Grandmother's Garden

This outfit makes me feel entirely myself, which is such an important thing to aim for when finding clothes that you love. A custom-made linen pinafore dress from TsiomikKids on Etsy has become one of my favorite garments in my whole closet. The circle skirt twirls beyond all expectations, and the fabric is so comfortable and versatile. I wore it over a striped blouse with a little gold locket necklace. I also added a dark green cardigan in the first picture, in case it's extra chilly. This ensemble is wonderful for meandering in a park, garden, or perusing quaint boutiques. I will never stop spinning in it.

Look Five: Tea Time

Can you tell I like gingham? This outfit is sophisticated and filled with vintage flair. It consists of a ModCloth high-low dress, a tan cardigan from ROOLEE, a white button-down shirt, and a floral broach that belonged to my great-grandmother. Wearing this ensemble makes me feel graceful and composed. I could see myself sipping Earl Grey from a dainty teacup while a friend sits next to me on a tree bough, discussing the simple joys of our lives.
