My Dark Academia Inspired Style

In my mind, the goal behind dark academia fashion is to look sophisticated and put together, and maintain the balance of being artistic and not take away from the art around you. I’ve incorporated a lot of this aesthetic into my personal wardrobe, to the point where I’m going to the grocery store in tweed and corduroy. Take that as you will! So, without further ado, let me show you some of my staple looks with my academic love affair.

The Importance of Neutrals

When deciding on colors for a dark academic look, you want to avoid anything too bold or vibrant. This is when neutrals should become your go-to. Blacks, whites, and tans are essential.

When in Doubt, Wear Blazers

I’m telling you the truth when I say you can’t go wrong with blazers. It’s such a staple item that should be in everyone’s wardrobe, which can be a layering piece all year long. I love oversized blazers, and some vintage styles have pockets big enough for books which is absolutely amazing.

Afternoon Daydreaming

Although this aesthetic is all about romanticizing schools and museums and libraries, sometimes you need to get out and enjoy nature. Clear your head from all the studying and chaos! Find a spot under a tree and slip into a brisk lullaby of daydreams and sleep. This ensemble is all about keeping it light and airy. This is when we verge on the side of light academia. That happens, sometimes. Think plaid and dark pinafores, paired with Victorian and Edwardian blouses. Oxfords and scarves go together wonderfully, it turns out.

Playing with Patterns

Patterns can really elevate a look, especially plaid, checkered, and buffalo print. I love to mix textures and patterns together too. Still, try to stick to darker tones when playing with patterns - don’t go too bold. You want to keep the subtlety going.

The Details

Details make the outfit! Go for intricate buttons, leather satchels, gold accents. It all makes a difference. I love to keep a bag with me big enough for a book. Also, when going with jewelry, resin or tortoiseshell can be a really nice touch. Coffee or tea could totally be considered an accessory too!
