March 23, 2021-
Spring has arrived according to the calendar, though in some areas (including where I live) the snow will still be here for a couple more weeks. Nevertheless, the sun shines, the birds chirp, and yes, the snow does melt. By the time we get to mid-April, the grass will be greener, the buds on the trees will be growing and the air will become even more fresh and warm.
This has been a hard winter for most people. I personally didn't find COVID too terrible to endure in terms of self-isolation until winter came along, preventing me from gaining solace from nature, something I truly clung to last spring and summer, as I always do when it comes along. But I think this year, I need Spring in my life more than anything.
Those early weeks between April-mid June, when the Auroras are just beginning to glimmer, the paths are being laid for woodland wanderings, and that "anything can happen" feeling lays within the air like a blanket of comfort, expressing emotions of youth and beauty. As we are cut off from seeing those we love and prevented from meeting new people who we may come to love, the romance of Spring feels more essential than it already has been in the past.
Dreamers romanticize life, as they should, in particular when the day-to-day becomes uneventful. But I think, especially for those of us who live in our heads, it's even more important now to romanticize the smallest moments of life. It would be a shame to look back at the months we endured this pandemic with only negative associations. The coming of Spring is a reminder that there is still beauty in life, despite the trials we've been enduring.
For my part, I plan to embrace these beautiful months by sitting outside with my pen and paper, taking walks in the woods with a camera in hand, drinking tea in the garden while I escape into a book, and marveling at the beauty of creation all around me. Spring is a gift, like every season it carries its own beauty. It's a time of year especially important to me, and it will be the breath of fresh air we all need after months of being locked indoors. Spring is nearly here, for some of us it already is, and we must do everything we can with it.
